A trio of Washington Huskies defensive backs were selected in the first 11 picks of the second round of the 2017 National Football League draft, giving UW four players drafted in the first and second rounds for just the second time in school history.
"I'm not really trying to fill the void [of Eddie Lacy], I'm trying to come in to do my job". "I think he had his own identity", Highsmith said. He is no. 5 nationally in rushing yards per game.
Yet when the Green Bay Packers interviewed the running back in advance of last week's draft, they were impressed with his answers to their questions and that he returned to school a year later to run for 1,375 yards as a senior and set the school's career rushing record with 3,901 yards. The Broncos took Green Bay's original fifth-round slot at No. 172, and the Packers picked up an extra seventh-rounder, No. 238. "I was basically committed before the draft ended, so it was mid-seventh round when I chose to go with the Packers".
Green Bay selected Purdue wide receiver DeAngelo Yancey with the first of two fifth-round picks on Saturday.
Jones was asked by the Green Bay media what their potential combo brings to the table.
The Packers like Williams' strong lower body and ability to make tackles.
All-Pro receiver Julio Jones' domination of a helpless group of defensive backs with nine receptions for 180 yards and two touchdowns in that game surely played a part in the Packers' preference for King.
Though they had to wait a while for their names to be called during the 2017 NFL Draft, former BYU running back Jamaal Williams and former Utah offensive lineman Isaac Asiata made the list of NFL newcomers who could make an immediate impact.
For the Packers, who run more sub-packages on defense than base 3-4 formations, he should find a comfortable home. He also rushed for 133 yards on a career-high-tying 22 carries against Nevada (11/21) and carried the ball 12 times for 124 yards against Akron (12/22) in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, as those 124 yards rank as the 11th-most in Famous Idaho Potato Bowl history.
In the 6th round, Ted Thompson selects Kofi Amichia, from South Florida.
"Obviously it's a very heavy lifting position, so availability will be Ty's No. 1 statistic", McCarthy said.
Jones was added with pick No. 182, the second running back chosen after the Packers grabbed BYU's Jamaal Williams late in the fourth round.
The Green Bay Packers had a lot of issues at running back last season. Depth at this position doubled overnight. Friday's showing just edged that of UW's 2015 draft class, which had four players selected in the draft's first 44 picks - Danny Shelton, Marcus Peters and Shaq Thompson in the first round, and Hau'oli Kikaha at No. 44 in the second.
Most of all, the Packers hope they can cover elite receivers because that's something they couldn't do previous year. Malachi Dupre was a former Louisiana track state champion in the long jump and high jump. Coach McCarthy is pleased with the talent he's added and is anxious to see how they fit in on the field.
