New Delhi, Jun 10 Attacking BJP chief Amit Shah for describing Mahatma Gandhi as a "chatur baniya", Opposition parties today demanded that he should apologise to the nation and insisted that the "denigrating" remark is withdrawn.
Targeting Shah for his comments and citing BJP and Sangh proximity, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala addressing a press conference in Delhi said that before Independence, Britain used Sangh and Mahasabha as "special objective vehicle" to divide and rule India.
Shah was speaking to a group of "eminent persons" on the second day of his three-day visit to the state. Amit Shah called Congress a special objective vehicle formed to secure freedom and being a clever "baniya" (meaning merchant) Gandhi knew the bleak future of Congress.
"Yeh darshata hai ke Amit Shah ka charitra aur maansikta kya hai (This shows the character and ideology of the BJP President Amit Shah)", added Surjewala. Congress didn't have any ideology or set of principles and it was only used as a special goal vehicle to secure freedom. Mahatma Gandhi ne nahi kiya, lekin ab kuch log usko bikherne ka kaam samapt kar rahe hain. "Jo deshdrohi naare lagayega, woh deshdrohi kahlaya jayega", he said.
"Congress kisi ek vichaar dhaara ke adhaar par, kisi ek siddhant ke adhaar par bani hui party hi nahi hai, woh azadi prapt karne ka ek special objective vehicle hai, azadi prapt karne ka ek saadhan tha".
Shah added that "clarity of thought" helped the BJP to take firm stance on issues.
The BJP chief is in Chhattisgarh as part of his nationwide tour in preparation for the next round of elections in 2018 and 2019.
"At a time when the country is celebrating 100 years of Champaran Satyagrah of Gandhi, the BJP President has insulted him and the 1.25 crore people of India".
"It just reveals the contempt the BJP-RSS has for Gandhiji", he said.
