Former Trump Adviser Flynn Pleads Guilty To Lying To FBI

After the others filed out, Trump made an insistent plea to Comey - who, it turns out, kept careful memos of this and other interactions he had with the president - to take it easy on General Michael T. Flynn, his national security adviser who'd been fired the previous day.

"My guilty plea and agreement to co-operate with the Special Counsel's Office reflect a decision I made in the best interests of my family and of our country".

"Jared Kushner is the "very senior member" of President Donald Trump's transition team" who directed incoming national security adviser Michael Flynn to contact the Russian ambassador to the United States and other countries about a UN Security Council vote on Israeli settlements, sources familiar with the matter tell CNN.

"I recognize that the actions I acknowledged in court today were wrong", Flynn said in a statement.

Flynn has promised special counsel Robert Mueller his full cooperation as he pleads guilty to lying to the FBI, ABC News' Brian Ross reported on Friday.

The 58-year-old Flynn - a retired three-star Army general - is the fourth, and so far most senior, figure indicted in the sprawling investigation into Russian interference in last year's election.

In late December of previous year, Flynn called senior Trump transition team members at Mar-a-Lago in Florida three times to discuss conversations he was having with Kislyak about sanctions the United States placed on Russia and the Russian response to them.

Court documents say Flynn was instructed by "a senior official of the Presidential Transition Team" to discuss holding back on retaliation with Kislyak.

Then again, despite whatever appearance for the Trump administration that Flynn's testimony might portray, Michael Flynn is a known liar, and has admitted as such.

Previous reports have purported that Flynn spoke with then-Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak shortly after President Barack Obama imposed sanctions on Russia.

Ty Cobb also pointed out that Flynn worked in the White House for only 25 days and was a "former Obama administration official".

As per the charge sheet, 58-year-old Flynn, a retired general, lied when he told investigators that he did not ask Kislyak to "refrain from escalating the situation" in response to sanctions that then-president Barack Obama had imposed on Russian Federation, and that he did not ask the ambassador to either delay or defeat a related UN Security Council vote.

White House lawyer Ty Cobb told The Associated Press that Flynn's guilty plea and pledge to cooperate with the Russian Federation investigation does not implicate "anyone other than Mr. Flynn".

"The false statements involved mirror the false statements to White House officials which resulted in his resignation in February of this year", Cobb said in a statement released to reporters.

But Trump has repeatedly rejected that view.

Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about his phone calls in December 2016 with the Russian ambassador to America. When asked how he pleaded, Flynn only said, "Guilty, your honor".

In October, Paul Manafort, Trump's one-time campaign chairman, and Manafort's deputy Rick Gates were arrested on money laundering and tax-related charges in relation to their work for Moscow-backed Ukrainian leader Viktor Yanukovych.
