Google Launches New App to Save Mobile Data

Google said it will be launching its Android Oreo (Go edition) for low end devices on 6 December, when it releases Android 8.1.

Speaking of which, Android Oreo (Go edition) is expected to arrive with a total of nine apps pre-installed including Google Go, Google Assistant Go, YouTube Go, Google Maps Go, Gmail Go, Gboard, Google Play, Chrome, and Files Go. Google Go is primarly for Android Go Edition devices and will make searches easier on slow connections.

And don't worry: The Go Edition sports numerous signature features of its parent, Android Oreo, including Google Play Protect, which scans app downloads for malware.

Coming to Google Files Go; its a new app by Google that helps free up space, find files faster and share files offline with people nearby. As entry level devices usually have little storage space, Google said it optimised the OS and enhanced its preinstalled Google apps to take up 50 percent less space, resulting in a doubling of available storage on entry-level devices.

Google's new lightweight Android: Oreo Go is out now, so who's it aimed at?

Google has recently encouraged developers to design apps in accordance with its Building for Billions Guidelines, to optimize them for phones in developing markets. And now, the company has launched the Google Assistant for feature phones. "We're not just adapting our products for India, we're building for India first", says Caesar Sengupta, who heads the Next Billion Users division at Google. Google has also added a Go version of the Play Store, that will offer lightweight apps. The new Files Go app is created to help one quickly find files and get rid of any unwanted content. The new customized Go app is said to consume 40 percent less data. Sadly, existing budget devices won't be able to enjoy the Oreo Go, unless OEMs figure out some way to seed the new OS on old devices. every new version of Android will feature a Go version, with the possibility of faster update rollout in the future. Amongst all the announcements, the major one is the Google Assistant for Reliance JioPhone. Files Go was built from scratch for Go edition devices, and today the official version launched on the Google Play Store.

The Google Assistant for JioPhone will be available in English and Hindi, the company announced during an event here.
