Heisman Trophy Winner 2017: Speech, Highlights from Baker Mayfield Presentation

Mayfield won the Heisman Trophy for 2017, running away from the field in a landslide. As Mayfield's play was consistently dominant down the stretch and the other candidates fell off the pack, Mayfield emerged as the leader. It didn't always look like Mayfield would join Billy Sims, Jason White and Sam Bradford as Heisman winners for the Sooners, especially not after Oklahoma lost to Iowa State in the middle of the season. In leading the Sooners to a 12-1 record, Mayfield has completed 71 percent of his passes for 4,320 yards, 41 touchdowns and five interceptions, giving him an average of 11.8 yards per pass attempt and 16.6 yards per completion, with a rating of 203.8.

Mayfield won college football's most prestigious individual honor in a landslide over runner-up Bryce Love of Stanford and last year's Heisman victor, Lamar Jackson of Louisville. He finished third nationally in passer rating in 2015, set the single-season FBS passer rating record a year ago and is on pace to break his own record this season.

Mayfield has 14,320 yards and 129 touchdowns though the air in his college career. Along with the Heisman, Mayfield also won the Walter Camp, Maxwell and Davey O'Brien Awards.

Mayfield also discussed overcoming some difficulties, and although he didn't name them specifically, his February arrest for public intoxication and his one-series suspension for making a lewd gesture toward Kansas Jayhawks players this season may have been among the incidents he was referencing.

"Coach [Lincoln] Riley you have been a mentor to me", he said.

Only USC and Notre Dame have had more Heisman winners than Oklahoma.

Mayfield still has some unfinished business to attend to this season.
