Pounds of Pot Was for Christmas Presents, Elderly Couple Says

Or, well, maybe a lot greener, considering police reportedly seized about 60 pounds of marijuana, which the elderly couple, 80-year-old Patrick Jiron and 83-year-old Barbara Jiron, told cops they meant to give as Christmas presents, according to the York News-Times.

The couple is said to have told the local sheriff's department that "they didn't know it was illegal to transport marijuana in Nebraska".

"Either the senior citizens have a lot of friends or they were really feeling the gift of giving this year, because they swear that the $336,000 worth of weed was all going to get wrapped up as Christmas gifts", snarked Vice.

Although Patrick and Barbara Jiron are 83 and 70, respectively, their age has not slowed down their passion for Christmas or cannabis. During the traffic stop, the deputies smelled raw marijuana and asked the driver about the odor. The department estimated the street value of the pot at over $300,000. So did Dundee, the county's canine unit, who was pulled in to see if there was evidence for a probable cause search, since the marijuana wasn't immediately visible, according to the York News-Times. The elderly couple were driving from northern California to Boston and Vermont when they were stopped by the Nebraska sheriff's department. While multiple states have legalized marijuana, Nebraska has not.

The couple was being held in York County jail on suspicion of felony drug charges. He posted 10 percent of his $100,000 bond and has been released from jail.
