Watch Natalie Portman try to save Oscar Isaac in new Annihilation trailer

It was written and directed by Alex Garland (Ex Machina, 28 Days Later).

This new trailer combines handsome landscapes shots with legitimately jumpy moments.

Area X has been cut off from the rest of the continent for decades. Weird, bad stuff happens here.

In an effort to find out what happened to her husband, Portman's character, simply referred to as the biologist, enters an environmental disaster zone where she encounters a number of unusual plants, animals and other life forces that she wasn't prepared for.

The story is that of a group who are going into a mysterious area that is somewhat otherworldly and as the trailer tells you, a lot of things have gone in, but nothing has come out.

Natalie Portman stars as the Biologist, the lead of the story. Joining Portman and Leigh in the cast are Tessa Thompson (Thor: Ragnarok), Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin), Tuva Novotny (Borg/McEnroe), David Gyasi (Interstellar), and Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange), as well as Ex Machina costar Sonoya Mizuno.

While this trailer is full of stunning imagery and moments both gorgeous and terrifying, it all looks a bit louder and a bit more generic than VanderMeer's novel, which relegated much of the conflict to the Biologist's internal monologue and leaned on dread and foreboding rather than vicious creatures.

It was reported last week that Paramount is finalizing a deal for Netflix to take over the global distribution of Annihilation, with Paramount still handling the film's theatrical release in the U.S., Canada, and China.

The film is now scheduled to hit theaters on February 23, 2018, which is a busy weekend at the box-office. That doesn't mean Annihilation will be a bad movie (Garland is a smart filmmaker and Annihilation is a hard nut to crack!), but I hope the final film reflects the brainy, creepy novel and fills me with same sense of existential dread.
