The Douglas County Sheriff's Office said via its Twitter account that shots were fired in the course of the investigation and "multiple" deputies were injured.

Five deputies in all were shot by the suspect in suburban Denver, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said on Twitter Sunday morning. It was not immediately clear why the incident had escalated, Spurlock said.

"They went into the house at the same time", Spurlock said.

The scene was videotaped and posted on the Douglas County sheriff's Facebook page under the heading: "Motorcade for our fallen deputy". Of the five deputies wounded, one died.

Police in Colorado say a number of officers are "down" following a shooting incident outside Denver.

A suspect opened fire on deputies responding to a domestic disturbance, according to the office. Parrish had been on the force for only seven months. The initial call stated that one officer was down. However, the suspect has been shot and is believed to be dead.

The other injured officers were identified as Mike Doyle, 28; Taylor Davis, 30; Jeffrey Pelle, 32, and Tom O'Donnell 31.

"We have multiple deputies down, no update on their status". Their injuries were not life- threatening, he said.

Donald Trump has tweeted his condolences to the victims of the shooting in Highlands Ranch suburb south of Denver, Colorado.
