Schools to open late Tuesday

Wake opened schools Tuesday on a two-hour delay "due to the likely effects of extreme temperatures on buses left idle during winter break".

As of 9 a.m. Tuesday, 81 buses hadn't started initially, Luten said.

Waynesboro Schools announced a two-hour delay for tomorrow. The complications delayed some buses, but there were no significant issues, Luten said.

Bus mechanics say it was mostly the older model school buses that struggled to thaw out Monday.

One parent who spoke with CBS North Carolina said he thought the problems could have easily been avoided.

School districts have already delayed school for some areas across the Piedmont Triad.

If your children are headed out to the bus stop or to walk to school, make sure that they are properly dressed for these freezing temperatures, with warm coats, hats, gloves, and scarves. "The last thing we want to happen is have our students waiting by the curb for a bus that's a half hour to an hour late when it's 14 degrees".
