The Crown: Helena Bonham Carter near deal to play Princess Margaret

"That informs everything we do". These moves are being made as a result of a major time jump between seasons; the goal of The Crown is to capture the entire reign of Elizabeth II, and at the moment we're jettisoning towards the middle era.

According to the Evening Standard, Bonham Carter was in the running to play Elizabeth before the decision that she would play Margaret.

While Carter's reported casting has certainly excited fans, it looks like we'll still have to wait a little while longer to find out if she has indeed landed the royal role.

For Carter, playing a member of the royal family is not entirely new territory.

This isn't the first time Bonham Carter has starred in a regal role - the Harry Potter actress also played Princess Margaret's mother, the original Queen Elizabeth (also known as the Queen Mother) in the Academy Award winning film, The King's Speech. The Sweeney Todd and Alice in Wonderland star will take over the role from Vanessa Kirby, who played Margaret in the first two seasons.

"You'll forget all about me and the rest of the cast".

So what else can we expect from Season 3?

The Crown's historical consultant, Robert Lacey, spoke to Town & Country about what the audience can expect from the upcoming season.

The Crown season 3 could premiere as early as this fall, but we wouldn't be shocked if it is pushed back later to accommodate all of the changes. The Queen's sister Margaret is now played by Vanessa Kirby. "I was so desperate to do further on. because it's going to be so fun [to enact] when their marriage starts to break down".

And if Helena Bonham Carter is brought in to play Princess Margaret, it's pretty obvious who should be cast as Prince Philip.

"I don't want to speculate too much, but he's brilliant, if it's the person I think it might be", he said. I know telly is dead but anyone who can but isn't watching both The Crown on Netflix and Feud on 2 is a fool.

Lord knows she can already hold a cigarette like Margaret.
