Tit for Tat Politics of Congress and BJP …and helpless people suffer

Karnataka and neighbouring Goa have conflicting interests on the issue of sharing Mahadayi River water.

The state government has deployed police personnel to maintain law and order situation.

If public and private transport, including cabs, autos and buses are not available due to the shutdown, IT firms are likely to declare holiday and work on Saturday.

Vatal Nagaraj, who heads 'Kannada Okoota, ' an umbrella organisation of Kannada bodies that led the protest march from town hall to Freedom Park in the city on Thursday, warned protests in front of the Parliament if the Prime Minister does not intervene in the matter.

Shettar said Siddaramiah was instigating and supporting the activists to call for a bandh on February 4.

Earlier in the day, a group of protestors tried to disrupt rail services by entering the Bengaluru's Sangolli Rayanna railway station but police stopped and detained them.

The 12-hour, dawn-to-dusk bandh has been called by Kannada Chalavali Vatal Paksha (KCVP) and other fringe outfits. With no resolution of the crisis in sight, the farmers from Karnataka's drought prone districts, particularly Gadag, Dharwad, Belagavi, Haveri, and Bagalkot have raised the banner of revolt against the central government to end the crisis.

Though the river runs 29 km in Karnataka and 52 km in Goa, its catchment area is spread over 2,032 km in the southern state as against 1,580 km in Goa.

Several firms including IT giant Wipro has declared a holiday for employees. The number of people who will attend Modi's rally on February 4 will make it clear BJP will win the election that will happen in April-May, Shah said.

"This is one hundred percent a political vendetta", says Jagadish Shettar, Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly and added this is a "completely government sponsored bandh".

The Mahaydai Water Disputes Tribunal, headed by J.N. Panchal, on July 28, 2016 rejected the state's petition for releasing the river water, citing various grounds, including ecological damage the twin canal projects may cause. Meanwhile, they also set up a four-member committee to monitor any activities by Karnataka to divert water.

The outfits have called for a Karnataka bandh on January 25 when Shah will address a rally in Mysuru and a Bengaluru bandh on February 4, the day Modi arrives in the city.
