BB&T cites 'technical issue' in outage affecting customers

Countless customers were left shocked and frustrated that BB&T was down overnight, an incident blamed on a 'technical issue, ' according to the bank.

"We are carefully reviewing the cause of this issue, and taking steps to make sure this doesn't occur in the future", the bank said.

A BB&T outage that left millions of customers unable to access their accounts overnight is finally starting to be resolved.

The Winston-Salem-based bank acknowledged the outage Thursday and Friday on its website and Twitter account but did not specify what went wrong. We will continue to provide updates here and on, ”; the company said in a tweet.

An outage map showed the biggest impact was focused on Charlotte, Atlanta, the Washington DC area and Philadelphia. Thank you for your patience as we work diligently to restore your services.

"At this time, many of our services are unavailable, including digital banking, Phone24, and ATM". He said bank branches that are normally open on Saturdays will stay open two additional hours to assist clients.

"Bank officials have apologized and say they do not believe the issue is related to a cyber security attack".

In January, Capital One Financial charged customers multiple times for the same debit-card transaction due to technical glitches.

They also recommended keeping enough cash around the house to be able to pay for one-to-three days of food and other necessities in case of a similar disruption in access to their money.
