Israel's Netanyahu Hospitalized With Fever, Cough

Israel has expedited construction permits to enable temporary quarters for the U.S. Embassy to open in Jerusalem as planned in May, the Finance Ministry said on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu was at Hadassah Ein Kerem Medical Center in Yerushalayim Tuesday night, to undergo a series of tests for a high fever and cough, the hospital spokesperson said in a statement. The United States has said it will relocate its embassy in May, bringing forward the contested move to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the creation of the Jewish state.

"The doctors recommended him to rest and undergo medical treatment", his office said in a statement, without giving details.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attends the weekly cabinet meeting, convened at the Dimona municipality building in southern Israel, March 20, 2018.

Kahlon said the move was of "strategic" importance to Israel and that his staff would "do everything that is needed to respect the timetable". Even that target would have been tight due to the time needed to authorize and complete the necessary upgrade of the consular facility in Jerusalem's Arnona neighborhood.

The waiver will be valid for three years.

Trump has heralded his December 6, 2017 recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital and the move of the embassy as a highlight of his administration.
