Karnataka poll date leak: Election Commission sets up probe panel

Polling for the 224-member Karnataka assembly elections will be held in a single phase on May 12, while counting of votes will be done on May 15.

Also, the polling will be conducted by using both Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter-Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) devices.

The Congress is now in power in Karnataka with 122 seats against the BJP's 43.

The alleged leak of the Karnataka election schedule has happened at a time when the Election Commission's neutrality is being questioned by political parties, and it has been accused of working under pressure from the Narendra Modi government. Shah who was speaking at a press conference in Bengaluru was seated next to Yeddyurappa BJP's candidate in for the assembly elections and the punchline of Amit Shah's unintended joke.

Replying to a query, Parameshwara said, "Myself, Siddaramaiah and the party also are aware of anti-incumbency factor, but the Congress is going to definitely form the next government by winning May 12 elections", he said.

Chief Election Commissioner OP Rawat, during his press conference on the Karnataka election dates, said that the Election Commission would take appropriate action into the leak of information. Congress secured 122 seats, 9 more than the majority mark of 113, while Janata Dal (Secular) and BJP won 40 seats each. Women too supported the Congress, with 48% of them are saying they will vote for the ruling party, while 29% are with the BJP, 14% said they would vote for the JD (S).

Surjewala asked if an FIR would be filed against Malviya and notice given to BJP chief Amit Shah.

"But when the 14th finance commission was implemented after the BJP came to power at the Centre, funds for Karnataka were increased to Rs 2,19,506 crore".
