The Turpin parents were arrested on January 14 at their home which is located about 113 kilometres east of Los Angeles, after an emaciated teenage girl climbed out of a window of the house and called police.

All of the 13 siblings, ranging in age from 2 to 29 years of age, were severely malnourished.

Officers had initially thought the 17-year-old girl was about 10-years-old.

Authorities said the abuse was so long-running that the children's growth was stunted.

David Turpin, 57, was also charged with one count of a lewd act on a child under the age of 14. Some neighbours said they were unaware there were children in the house.

The couple allegedly starved, choked, and beat their children.
