Binghamton University student charged in the stabbing death of freshman

Police say this was not a random act, but additional police presence will remain on campus throughout the night and into tomorrow to ensure the safety of students.

A 19-year-old freshman was fatally stabbed on New York's Binghamton University campus and a fellow student suspected of attacking him was taken into custody after a search Monday, reports CBS affiliate WBNG.

At this time, investigators from multiple agencies are interviewing people and searching areas of the campus around Windham Hall.

Faughnan did not identify the suspect, and said investigators have not verified whether he is a current BU student. They described the suspect as a light-skinned male wearing dark trousers and a dark, hooded sweatshirt.

This was the second slaying of a student this semester.


Classes were canceled for the day at BU on Monday, April 16, as a result of the tragedy. "We're an incredible community here at Binghamton, but we've faced tragedy and hardship before in different ways, and we've stuck together and stood by each other".

The crisis team at the Middle/High School has convened and a plan is in place to provide counseling to students and staff who may be in need. Hayley Anderson, of Westbury, Long Island, was found dead in an off-campus home in March.

Michael Roque, a 20-year-old from Massapequa, was charged with second-degree murder and booked into the Broome County Jail, according to The Press & Sun-Bulletin.
