The New York City-based James Beard Foundation's stated mission is "to celebrate, nurture, and honor chefs and other leaders making America's food culture more delicious, diverse, and sustainable for everyone". Kevin Tien of D.C.'s Himitsu was also there as a finalist in the category of Rising Star Chef of the Year, as was José Andrés, who was recognized with the James Beard 2018 Humanitarian of the Year award.

Alabama's Highlands Bar and Grill won the outstanding restaurant honor.

The Oscars of the food world handed out its awards Monday night, and a chef who got her start in Miami took home a coveted medal. Kaysen also opened Bellecour in Wayzata a year ago. Chef Nina was also voted fan favourite on Bravo's "Top Chef: New Orleans" Season 11.

The Beard Awards moved to Chicago in 2015 after being based in NY for more than 20 years.

FIG won for outstanding wine program.

Philadelphia cleaned up previous year, as Stephen Starr won for best restaurateur, Michael Solomonov won for best chef, and Greg Vernick won for best chef in the mid-Atlantic region.

Cogswell was one three Philadelphians nominated for James Beard Awards this year.
