Rep. Lou Barletta wins GOP Senate primary in Pennsylvania, CNN projects

In Pennsylvania, primary voters will decide the fate of President Donald Trump's pick for U.S. Senate.

Democrats' path to a possible House majority starts with several seats in the Philadelphia suburbs, and the party picked its candidates there in Tuesday's primary.

A redrawn congressional map and a string of House Republican retirements have given Democrats more reasons to be optimistic about Pennsylvania.

Voters also decided the outcomes in contested primaries for lieutenant governor in both parties. But as is often the case with politics, things aren't that clear cut in the Keystone State - and the simple win-lose calculus of the vote may not be the whole equation. Notably, Trump's approval rating has sunk to just 39 percent in Pennsylvania, compared with 55 percent disapproving of the president's performance, according to an April Muhlenberg/Morning Call poll.

Butler County is now split into three different congressional districts.

Outgoing Republican Gov. Butch Otter's seat is nearly ensured to stay in GOP hands in November.

Lt. Gov. Brad Little is seeking the GOP nomination, with Otter's endorsement, while Tommy Ahlquist, an emergency room doctor turned developer, hopes his outsider status carries him as it did IN businessman Mike Braun IN last week's GOP Senate primary. He now will face Democrat Paul Theobald, a hog farmer, historian and former administrator at Wayne State College who ran unopposed for his party's nomination.

The Democratic race is between state consultant Paulette Jordan, who has embraced extra progressive coverage positions and could be the state's first feminine governor and the nation's first Native American governor, and businessman A.J. Balukoff, who ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic nomination for governor in 2014.
