For a brief period, it looked like the newly-resurgent Robert Downey Jr. would alternate big screen appearances as Tony Stark and Sherlock Holmes.
Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law will both be reprising their roles as the British detective (played by Downey Jr.) and his famous sidekick Dr. Watson (played by Law) in the eagerly-anticipated flick.
With the movie opening in December 2020, it will be in direct competition with the animated Sing 2, and untitled live-action Disney movie and James Cameron's Avatar 2. The previous movie from the franchise was released in 2011, making this to be almost a decade long wait.
Warner Bros. has announced that the Sherlock Holmes franchise will return for a third installment during the 2020 Christmas season. More casting announcements may be made after a director has been chosen for the film. The previous two stories took guy Ritchie, but it is assumed that it will be replaced by someone else. The script comes from Chris Brancato, writer for critically acclaimed series Narcos and Hannibal.
Also opening on December 25 that year is Illumination/Universal's Sing 2 as well as an untitled Disney live action film on December 23. Film Company Warner Bros. chose to remove the third part "Sherlock Holmes" with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude law in the lead roles, writes Entertainment Weekly.
Downey Jr may be done with Tony Stark for the foreseeable future, but the good news is that we are going to see more of his exuberance and charisma as Sherlock Holmes one last time.
