Tiger Woods trails by six after putting woes at Quail Hollow

A 156-golfer field is set to take on Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte N.C. for the Wells Fargo Championship.

The then world No 2 held a share of the opening round in 2013 but ended in a share of 10th spot after successive 73s over the weekend, with a second-round 76 the following year limiting McIlroy to a tied-eighth finish. The Wells Fargo Championship leaderboard is available here.

"I don't really have a ton to lose", Peterson said with a shrug. While I love him this week, I'm going to fade for the most part. It feels just easy out there today, but the last three holes are just so tough.

So if you're anxious about nerves getting to the Fort Worth native while 15 players (including favorite and two-time tournament champion Rory McIlroy) are within three shots, rest easy. He had a tight match against eventual victor Bubba Watson until losing on the 17th hole.

Woods is only player to win a major and a PGA Tour event on the same course in the same year.

He holed a 30-foot birdie putt on the final hole at Eagle Point in Wilmington to beat Dustin Johnson and Pat Perez.

Woods ended the day tied for 34th in the contest at Quail Hollow.

Now 27, Ernst is currently 93rd on the Web.com Tour's money list, but as a recent champ of the event, he's teeing it up again at Quail Hollow this week.

That said, they haven't faced an attack in the form of Liverpool's and I simply can't see the visitors not scoring. Justin Thomas won the PGA Championship last summer at Quail Hollow. McIlroy and Fowler have both won Wells Fargo titles, while Thomas won previous year at the PGA. He has eight top-10s at this event (most recently 2015) and has made 14 straight cuts here. Last but not least, Joaquin Niemann is a big prospect and fancied to go well, although [180.0] seemed a bit skinny about a teenager from Chile who's only just turned pro. The last player to do that was Jack Nicklaus. The previous player to win on the same course where he won a major the previous year was Jack Nicklaus in the 1973 Bing Crosby National Pro-am at Pebble Beach.

The last three occasions, the major champions didn't have a chance because they didn't play - Rory McIlroy (Congressional), Graeme McDowell (Pebble Beach) and Tiger Woods (Torrey Pines). He did that twice: Pebble Beach in 2000 and Torrey Pines in 2008. Three major championships, starting with the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills, are played in a nine-week span. "From one generation to the other, at both ends of the spectrum, it's been incredible".

Of the rest Ryan Ruffles will be hoping to make the most of a sponsor's exemption into the field after playing less than his best in the team environment last week.

Sure, that four-pack of missing majors to match Jack Nicklaus' record of 18 Grand Slam tilts - and the more attainable goal of matching Sam Snead on the all-time PGA Tour victory list (he now trails Slammin' Sammy by three trophies) - are the most often cited examples of Woods' career scorecard, but before the golden years finally arrive for Tiger the only real competitive comparisons will be against himself.
