Visa payment disruption hits Europe

A number of British banks said it should still be possible for customers to take cash out from ATMs using their cards. "We will keep you updated".

The company wrote in a statement: 'Our goal is to ensure all Visa cards work 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

United Kingdom shoppers struggled to make payments on Friday evening after a "service disruption" at Visa stopped some transactions from being processed.

The visa outage seems to be by no means uniform, and other stores across the shopping precinct reported no problems at all this afternoon.

Scores of people posted on our Facebook page to say they had been rejected at various shops using different bank cards.

The issue with payments began just after 2:30pm today.

Customers around Europe vented their frustrations on social media, with some unable to pay bills or order taxis overseas.

HSBC bank's UK Twitter account replied to a customer query saying: "From what we understand there are still intermittent issues but services are slowly recovering".

A Sainsbury's spokesperson said: "We are aware that Visa are now experiencing problems. Good job my local garage knows me".
