Brilliant Edinson Cavani double sends Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal home

In the global battle of the super strikers, it was advantage South America as Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani's Uruguay knocked Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal out of the World Cup Saturday.

Paris Saint-Germain striker Cavani curled home a superb 62nd-minute victor to settle a thrilling second round duel in Sochi which sends Uruguay into a quarter-final against France next Friday.

Pepe finally breached the Uruguay defence ten minutes after the break with a powerful header following a corner to make 1-1 for Portugal.

It was not Uruguay's finest performance, but the result is what counts for La Celeste.

Speaking to ITV, Neville said: 'The two centre-backs played well against Cristiano Ronaldo tonight but everything that came into that box they had to clear.

Edinson Cavani celebrates after scoring for Uruguay against Portugal.

The European champions bow out of the World Cup with a feeling of unfinished business, having come unstuck against opponents who were more accomplished on the day.

It has already begun for Lionel Messi, who was also given his boarding pass for a flight home on Saturday when Argentina fell to a 4-3 defeat vs. France in Kazan - but the two superstars have wholly different issues to consider before making a decision regarding their global future. Uruguay have been compared to Atletico Madrid throughout the tournament and with a stubborn defence led by the brilliant Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez, the similarities are obvious.

That was the first goal the twice World Cup champions had conceded in the tournament in Russian Federation, but it took Cavani only seven minutes to put them back ahead at the packed Fisht Stadium overlooking the Black Sea.

Portugal manager, Fernando Santos is expected to keep forward, Ricardo Quaresma in the side at the expense of Bernardo Silva, meaning his side will be unchanged from the 1-1 draw with Iran. It was Ronaldo who became the first to test the opposition goalkeeper, forcing Fernando Muslera into action with a shot from 20 yards, but it was straight down the windpipe of the Uruguayan keeper, who swooped to gather comfortably.

The Uruguay vs Portugal round of 16 game will be played on June 30, Saturday at 11:30 pm India time.

Edinson Cavani, who failed to finish the match after suffering a late injury, scored a superb goal in each half, and although Pepe scored in between, it was not enough to halt the Uruguayans, who have won all four of their matches so far in Russian Federation.

Stopping Ronaldo. It was that simple for Uruguay.

"We go with our heads held high and we are sure that this team will continue to win things". That's the first goal allowed all tournament for Uruguay.
