Chelsea target Kovacic turns down United move

Jose Mourinho had been manager for three months and United, who had been beaten at home days earlier by Manchester City and would lose at Watford the following weekend, were mired in a run of three straight defeats.

The France global wants to leave Old Trafford after falling down the pecking order at Manchester United. So it's only natural that a potential Martial for Jerome Boateng swap deal narrative would gain traction in the silly season. He is out for the start of the season.

But Mourinho won't forget this summer's transfer campaign in a hurry and will not be dissuaded from using it publicly as explanation for any evident failings in United's play at a later point.

Competition would still be fierce, with Renato Sanches, Corentin Tolisso, a World Cup victor with France, Javi Martinez and Thomas Mueller also seeking midfield places.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp did his business early, bringing in Brazil's World Cup goalkeeper Alisson just weeks after two shocking errors by Loris Karius in the Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid.

Martial has been looking for a move away from Manchester United this summer and several clubs hold an interest in the Frenchman.

So far, only Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant have arrived at Old Trafford and the transfer window closes August 9. In recent years Milan have been interested in him but have not managed to secure a signing.

United have been willing to let the former Monaco striker leave even before he left the States - but only to a European club. "So, if I get one player until the end of the market, that's fine". United could also give Martial to Bayern as part of a deal for Robert Lewandowski.

McGarry continued: "He has been throughout his career a manager who has used in title-winning season a maximum of 19 players over the majority of the season". Everybody wants to be the team that people say, "They play great football", but at my time at the club and how we used to do things, there aren't that many changes.
