GOP Congressman, Wife Indicted on Campaign Finance Violations

Hunter and his wife on Thursday pleaded not guilty to the charges, and later Thursday Rep. Hunter dismissed the charges as politically motivated and a "late hit". Meanwhile, Speaker Paul Ryan has stripped Hunter of his committee assignments while the investigation moves forward.

The Hunter family is a political dynasty in the area.

Congressman Duncan Hunter (R-CA) arrives for his arraignment at federal court in San Diego, California, U.S. August 23, 2018.

Hunter, who represents most of East County, was one of President Donald Trump's earliest supporters in Congress. It was a risk that has been looming large over Hunter's career for some time.

"This is modern politics and modern media mixed in with law enforcement that has a political agenda", Hunter told San Diego's KGTV on Wednesday.

Hunter admits to some wrongdoing, or "mistakes", and says he paid some money back to the campaign.

"The Hunters' improper use of campaign funds for personal expenses occurred despite numerous warnings about the prohibition against using campaign funds for personal expenses and repeated inquiries from Duncan Hunter's campaign treasurer about questionable purchases", USA attorney Adam Braverman, an interim Trump administration appointee, said in a news release on Tuesday. She told him he should buy them at a golf pro shop so they could later describe the purchase as "some (golf) balls for the wounded warriors", according to court documents.

MacCullum suggested that the couple have an agreement for Martha Hunter to "take the heat". "But I think it's because he's just backed into a corner", Campa-Najjar said.

"I'm gone for five days a week".

Ammar Campa-Najjar has briefly responded to Fox News' headline highlighting how he is the grandson of a terrorist directly involved in the 1972 Munich massacre.

The federal grand jury indictment depicts the couple as binge spenders who over eight years pocketed a steady stream of dollars intended for campaign purposes, while their household budget was awash in red ink.

Pointing out that his wife acted as his campaign manager, Hunter said, "whatever she did, that'll be looked at too, I'm sure, but I didn't do it".

The indictment listed alleged use of campaign money to pay for tuition for his children's private school, video games, dental work, lavish dinners and movie tickets. The indictment notes that in the last seven years, the Hunters had racked up $37,761 in bank overdraft and "insufficient funds" fees due to the more than 1,100 times they had overdrawn their personal bank accounts.

'My opponents have to go back three generations to attack me.

"The charges against [Congressman] Hunter are deeply serious", Mr Ryan said in a statement.
