The Note 9 will have Samsung's octa-core Samsung Exynos 9810 processor in the United Kingdom or an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 in the U.S., with a choice of either 6 or 8GB of RAM, depending on storage variant. That's just as true in Fortnite, and since the console versions officially support mice a predominantly controller-based segment of players occasionally getting smoked by mouse users.
The Note 9 looks a lot like the Note 8, but there are some changes.
We then dropped the Note 8's display further down to 1480x720, and while it did make for a better experience, the game looked significantly blurrier on the smartphone's 6.3-inch display, making the choice of using a resolution of 2220x1080 with the Samsung Game Launcher and the Fortnite Android beta in-game settings locked to Medium for the best experience.
Samsung said the Note 9 will be the first Android phone to support Fortnite, a hugely popular video-and-smartphone survival game that was only playable on computers, consoles and Apple products until now. Instead of the Note 8's odd placement, the Note 9's fingerprint scanner is now positioned mercifully below the camera module.
The new phone gets an internal storage upgrade, too.
Standalone LTE connectivity without phone. According to Samsung, charging the new S Pen for only 40 seconds is enough to return up to 30 minutes of usage or 200 button clicks.
In terms of build, it is still a typical Samsung flagship which means it uses glass for both front and back. Though they rarely agree on much, most Samsung users and iPhone users can agree that smartphone batteries need work.
Killing off the Note brand seems highly unlikely, particularly as it endured the Note 7 debacle with a niche following. While the base variant is listed in Mystic Black, Engineered Blue and Artisan Copper colour options, the 512GB variant is expected to be available in Mystic Black and Engineered Blue. Its embedded heart rate monitor keeps track of your pulse all day long and will alert you when your heart rate spikes, suggesting guided breathing exercises to calm you down.
Looking at the Note 9's overall design and feature set, there will be more than a handful of people who will say Samsung is playing it safe here.
Pre-orders for the smartphone will kick off tomorrow on 10 August, with the 6GB/128GB model costing £899, and the 8GB /512GB storage model priced at £1,099. But while earth-shattering new features are in short supply, it will carry an earth-shattering price tag: US$1,000. "Everything is a little bit better, but nothing's revolutionary".
