Sarah Palin on John McCain: 'Today We Lost an American Original'

The doors of the state capitol will remain open through Wednesday evening for the public to pay their respects to McCain.

From there, Mr McCain will depart from Arizona for the last time from Phoenix Sky Harbour International Airport.

Her daughter Meghan McCain, co-host of the television talk show "The View", sobbed openly.

Some people traveled for hours, including a group of Vietnamese-born residents of Orange County, California, who arrived on two buses and wore yellow T-shirts reading, "We salute our hero Senator John McCain".

Meghan McCain wept over her father's flag-draped casket in one of the most emotional moments of late U.S. Sen.

Meanwhile, Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, the No. 2 Senate Republican, said there'd likely be a "discussion" and suggested the Rules Committee could take up the issue, the Hill reported.

He finally did so for McCain around 4 p.m. Monday, signing a proclamation that described the move as "a mark of respect for the memory and longstanding service of Senator John Sidney McCain III".

Ducey said McCain's fight for America wasn't over adding "it's a fight all Americans are obligated to continue on his behalf".

A private funeral will be held at the Naval Academy Chapel in Annapolis, Md., followed by a private burial at the Naval Academy Cemetery, on Sunday.

The former senator said McCain had "been to more countries, knew more foreign leaders and had a better grasp of history than any other American official, including our secretaries of state".

He would have turned 82 years old on Wednesday. The Democrat brought a bouquet of flowers and said she had always looked up to McCain and voted for him. That time, ABC News reporter Jonathan Karl asked the president if he considers McCain, who was tortured during his captivity during the Vietnam War, a hero. "He gave me a rapper's name", Morales said. Ducey echoed McCain's love for the state, saying, "Imagining an Arizona without John McCain is like imagining an Arizona without the Grand Canyon".

He took office in Arizona in the early 1980s, first as a congressman and then as a senator in the seat once held by senator Barry Goldwater.

The viewing later in the day will go on as long as people are waiting in line, said Rick Davis, McCain's former presidential campaign manager. "My biggest challenge is deciding whether to run for reelection in 2020", he said McCain told him.

Thursday morning will see a procession through Phoenix on the way to a memorial service at North Phoenix Baptist Church, with the public invited to line the route along Interstate 17.

Former Vice President Joe Biden will be among those paying tribute to the deceased senator.

McCain will have a national memorial service at Washington's National Cathedral on Saturday.
