Tributes have been paid to Republican senator John McCain after he died at the age of 81 following a battle with brain cancer.

The former president signaled kinship with his former opponent in the 2008 presidential election, despite their differences in politics.

Prior to his death, McCain, said his current term would be his last and freely discussed the implications in his memoir, The Restless Wave, released in May.

McCain, became a public figure at age 31 when his bed-bound image was broadcast from North Vietnam in 1967.

John was elected to the US House of Representatives for Arizona in 1982, then joined the US Senate in 1986.
