Bridge collapses in Kolkata, cars fall on the road below

This incident took place two years after a section of an under-construction flyover collapsed in the Burrabazar area of central Kolkata killing 28 people.

"A part of the Majherhat bridge between Taratala and Mominpur collapsed around 4.30 p.m", a fire official said.

Following the incident, ambulances and disaster management response force personnel with heavy machinery rushed to the spot to carry out rescue work. There are no flights in the evening, we are unable to do so.Our team is focused on relief and rescue work. "I pray that those who are injured recover at the earliest".

Meanwhile, the Rail Vikash Nigam Limited, which is constructing the Metro line/station there, said in a statement that there is no connection between the collapsed bridge and the construction of the Metro line.

According to reports, locals are helping in evacuating people buried under the debris. Cranes have been deployed and gas cutters are being used for the rescue operation.

The Logical Indian prays for the well-being of the people who are trapped under the bridge and the ones undergoing treatment now. "Had they been there during the time of accident, an unfortunate thing might have happened", she said.

Majerhat bridge in South Kolkata has collapsed.

A fire official said that almost 20 people were rescued. "Rest of the investigation will be done later", Banerjee said.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee told reporters that several transport workers may have been in a small office under the overpass when it collapsed.

The West Bengal state governor, Keshari Nath Tripathi, said the bridge "deserved better maintenance". Locals have joined the authorities in rescuing people trapped under the debris.
