Gennady Golovkin promised a "special war" when he clashes with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez after the pair successfully made weight in Las Vegas. The championship rounds was drama with the fight close Golovkin took it to Canelo landing big punches but Alvarez responded with punches going after the champ.
As midnight approached, Canelo Alvarez walked out of T-Mobile Arena wearing a shimmery gold sports jacket, sporting a bandage over his left eye and suddenly holding all the cards. Judges Dave Morietti and Steve Weisfeld scored it 115-113 for the new champion, while Glenn Feldman saw it as a draw. Scores of 115-113 either way or a draw were easy conclusions to reach, meaning any talk of controversy is unwarranted. In a lot of ways, individual scorecards reflected what type of punches you place in higher esteem: Canelo's selective use of "Power Punches" or Gennady Golovkin's relentless and volume-driven use of "The Jab".
"I am a great fighter, and I showed it tonight", said Alvarez, roared on by a partisan crowd throughout on the eve of Mexico's Independence Day celebrations. Criticized and chastised for his approach in the initial meeting last September, Alvarez looked like a different fighter this time around; in truth, he looked more like himself. Welterweight challenger and former World Champion Amir Khan gave Canelo a slight edge after 12.
"It was a great fight, seriously", Golovkin said.
Urias looked good in his return, tossing a flawless inning on just 12 pitches to close out the victory, striking out one.
Alvarez (50-1-2, 34 KOs) now holds the WBA and WBC middleweight titles as Golovkin suffered the first loss of his professional career after 40 matches.
Alvarez's six-month ban after testing positive for clenbuterol - he claimed the positive test came from eating contaminated meat - scuppered the first prospective rematch date earlier this year.
'I pushed him back, it was me who was aggressive. Instead, he stayed in the center of the ring and brought the fight to Golovkin, but Triple-G was still not impressed with his style. "It was a clear victory".
"He's a great fighter but I'm a great fighter and I showed it tonight", Alvarez said after he claimed the World Boxing Council, World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation belts. "Hopefully there'll be a third fight".
