"I had to watch Cosby make jokes and attempt to degrade and diminish me, while his lawyers belittled and sneered at me".
"I'm to permitted to treat him any different based on who he is or who he was", Judge Steven T. O'Neill said during the sentencing. But in April, when prosecutors claimed he had a private plane and asked the judge to revoke his bail, Cosby stood up in court and yelled, "He doesn't have a plane, you a**hole", referring to himself in the third person. We're glad the judgment day has finally come for Mr. Cosby'.
Bill Cosby was sentenced to three to 10 years in state prison for his 2004 assault of Andrea Constand, a Pennsylvania judge ruled Tuesday. Afterward, he was seen laughing and talking with his defense team. In his more than 50 years in showbiz, the 81-year-old comedian and star of The Cosby Show had racked up enough awards and honors to fill up a small museum. The judge appeared shocked by the request and refused.
O'Neill says Cosby could "quite possibly be a danger to the community".
The court also fined Cosby $25,000.
Sixty women have accused Cosby, 81, of rape and sexual assault over a span of time ranging from 1965 to 2008. Janice Dickinson, a former model who testified that Cosby assaulted her, threw back her head and laughed in the courtroom upon hearing the sentence, reports HuffPost.
Five months after walking out of the Montgomery County Courthouse with a guilty verdict, Bill Cosby has learned his fate.
Another Cosby accuser in the courtroom, Lili Bernard, said, "Maybe this will send a message to other powerful perpetrators that they will be caught and punished". He will now have to legally register as a sexual offender. He will also be required to take a sex offenders program.
Cosby must serve the minimum of three years before becoming eligible for parole.
His lawyers asked for house arrest.
A spokeswoman for the Montgomery County district attorney's office says Cosby will be held at the county jail for at least the next few days.
She said: 'This has been a long journey to justice for all of the accusers.
One user tweeted that Cosby's star could be used as a "potty spot" for dogs, while another said it was "unacceptable" it wouldn't be removed.
"When the sexual assault happened, I was a young woman brimming with confidence and looking forward to a future bright with possibilities". "Now, nearly 15 years later, I'm a middle-aged woman who's been stuck in a holding pattern for most of her adult life, unable to heal fully or to move forward".
Across the television-watching world, he was revered for his signature role, affable obstetrician and father Cliff Huxtable on The Cosby Show, which ran from 1984-92.
"This is America", wrote one Twitter user on Tuesday. Caty Weaver adapted it for VOA Learning English.
"We know what this country has done to black men for centuries".
