Shaw returnsto England squad to face Spain

"Statistically last year we were picking from a pool in the Premier League of 33 percent English players, this year we are down to 30 - and (among) the top six teams we are on a downward curve", he said after announcing his squad for next month's worldwide games with Spain and Switzerland.

Phil Foden, Jadon Sancho and Ryan Sessegnon had all been linked with a senior call-up but were not considered by Southgate for the Nations League game against Spain and friendly with Switzerland next month.

"When you look at the squad I have named, all of that squad should be available in two years time", Southgate said. "He's shown aggression and a desire not to lose, and is looking back to his powerful best". We're going to be playing Spain who have to replace David Silva and [Andres] Iniesta, and the questions are: is it Koke, [Cesc] Fabregas, Saul or Thiago Alcantara?

A wink to Jack Grealish or Nick Powell, perhaps, as well as an explanation for the inclusion of Stoke backstop Jack Butland.

However, Southgate says the door is not closed for the experienced trio.

"If we are encouraging young players about entering academies, we are selling them the dream and there's an ethical element there too".

"It's an area where we'd like more competition".

"Joe is somebody who we know about", he said.

And is has been confirmed today that Southgate has omitted Young from the squad and drafted in Shaw for internationals against Spain and Switzerland next month.

It is a sign of Southgate's regard for Liverpool's Adam Lallana that he gets a surprise recall despite being marginalised at Liverpool and not having made a start in the Premier League so far this season. Joe Gomez is 21.

Left-back Shaw, 23, has impressed for Manchester United in the early part of the new campaign, convincing Southgate he is ready to add to his seven caps.

The other additions to the squad have come about due to the retirement of Gary Cahill and Jamie Vardy, who have opened up spaces for James Tarkowski to come back in to the setup.
