Spain hand England rare defeat at Wembley

They led for only two minutes against Spain after Marcus Rashford's strike which was set up by Manchester United teammate Luke Shaw in the 11th minute of the Group 4 game.

It was a moment that silenced Wembley, as Luke Shaw collided with Dani Carvajal and the Englishman fell to the ground during England and Spain's UEFA Nations League match.

England manager Gareth Southgate is not sure if he will continue in his role beyond the 2020 European Championship.

England have lost three games in a row for the first time since Euro 88 and, once again, Southgate was left to lament the absence of an elite game-changing midfielder.

Physios attended to the injury for more than five minutes before the Manchester United player was carried off on a stretcher.

And though backed by a packed-out Wembley and the tiresome England Band, Southgate's side were unable to restore parity.

Shaw has only played seven minutes of global football in the three years since as he has struggled to hold down a place in the United team until the start of this season. At times his previous goals have come outside the box and we know he can hit the ball.

But he does not appear to be rushing to commit to England beyond the next European Championship and when so much progress has been made under his leadership, that should be considered a concern.

"But I'm proud of the way we finished the game".

Substitute Danny Welbeck saw a stoppage-time leveller controversially ruled out, meaning England head into Tuesday's friendly against Switzerland reeling from three successive defeats in all competitions for the first time since 1988. "It's important for their development and, physically, there are a lot of players who haven't had a game of football yet this season".

After struggling in the World Cup semi-final against Croatia, Jordan Henderson once again failed to rise to the occasion against one of Europe's best teams and if England are to become a major force he must begin to dictate play from midfield. "But I don't think we were under any illusions, as a coaching team". We want to test ourselves against the best and certainly tonight we put up a fight.

"But I thought Gomez's defending was exceptional".
