Tesla shares reel as executives quit and CEO smokes pot on webcast

Musk sipped whiskey and smoked marijuana during a more than two-and-a-half-hour podcast with comedian Joe Rogan late on Thursday that touched on everything from flame throwers and artificial intelligence to the end of the universe. Tesla noted in a statement to Reuters that Morton opted to depart from the company due to his discomfort with the level of public attention and Tesla's overall pace of work.

4, according to a company filing released on Friday.

During the podcast interview, Musk, who is also the founder of the startup Boring Co., as well as Neuralink, said that running Tesla has been the hardest of his current projects.

During the podcast, Mr Rogan offered Mr Musk a joint, which he said contained a mix of tobacco and marijuana - dried leaves and flowering parts of the female cannabis plant.

Shares of Tesla fell more than 6 per cent to reach a five-month low on Friday morning following the departure of the company's chief accounting officer, Dave Morton, who resigned less than a month into the job on Friday.

The billionaire CEO said in a blog post that the funding wasn't secured and that most shareholders wanted Tesla to remain public. Yet the incident could revive questions about whether Musk is the right person to lead Tesla.

Shortly after smoking in the video, Mr Musk looks at his phone and laughs, telling Rogan he is getting texts from friends asking why he is smoking weed during the interview. "I don't actually notice any effect".

Morton joined Tesla on August 6 after Tesla approached him for the chief accounting job.

"As a result, this caused me to reconsider my future". It said Morton had no disagreements with Tesla's leadership or financial reporting.

Musk apologised to Unsworth in July for similar insults he made on Twitter following the rescue of a dozen Thai schoolboys and their football coach from a cave in Thailand.

The Model 3 starts at $35,000 (€30k), although the cheapest one that can be purchased at present costs $49,000 (€42.5k).

The Palo Alto, California-based company said its chief financial officer and its corporate controller will oversee accounting functions. The report, which was published by electric car-themed news site InsideEVs, estimated that the Tesla Model 3, Model S, and Model X, were the Top 3 electric cars in the U.S. in August. Morton's resignation is effective immediately.
