I Know You’re Not Thinking, You Never Do

The press conference, which was about the new trade deal between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, features a moment in which President Donald Trump called on a female reporter for a question. "Like in a state of shock", Trump said after pointing to Vega.

"I'm not, thank you Mr. President", Vega replied, which the president apparently misheard as, "I'm not thinking, Mr. President".

He refused to let Vega ask a question about the other big news of the day: the FBI investigation into his Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh.

I'm not, thank you, Mr. President.

In July the White House updated its transcript of Trump's Helsinki press conference with Vladimir Putin, restoring one question an American journalist asked the Russian president.

When the president called upon Vega, he suggested she was "shocked" to have been picked for a question.

"Don't do that", the President told CNN's Kaitlan Collins when she asked him about the judge.

Instead of chiding the reporter, Trump purportedly said, "I know you're not thanking".

Vega referred obliquely to the exchange on her Twitter account later.

In the end, Vega was not even allowed to finish asking her question because Trump interrupted her by saying it was unrelated to the worldwide trade agreement, so he would be answering questions about the Kavanaugh inquiry later.

"A news conference means you get to ask whatever question you want to ask", she posted, adding the hashtag "#FirstAmendment. He then declined to answer her question.

He ignored her and moved on to another reporter's question.

In the same press conference, he shut down another reporter for inquiring about the Kavanaugh probe. Similarly to Vega, Collins was reproached with the president wagging his finger at her saying her actions were "not nice". "Mr. President, just to wrap up, do you promise to release the Federal Bureau of Investigation report'". Government broadcast producers had left the reporter's microphone muted while a Russian-to-English translator delivered Putin's answer to his previous question. "You know what, you've really had enough". "Somewhat compromising. And you know, I think it's very unfair to bring up things like this". "I'm not giving it to you".
