José Mourinho defends Manchester United from 'outplayed' claims

City moved back to the top of the Premier League with victory over their rivals as David Silva, Sergio Aguero and Ilkay Gundogan got on the scoresheet.

When asked whether this defeat ended United's Premier League title hoped just 12 games into the season, Mourinho offered a spiky response as he added: "We are not in the top four, so how can you talk about the title?"

Guardiola, meanwhile, was thrilled with his team's performance after they responded well to United's goal, having let a two-goal lead slip in last year's fixture.

"Despite that, we were stable, we score one goal, the first 15 minutes was so good and after that we didn't press so well".

The England forward took down a lovely pass from Fernandinho in the second half and should have shot with his left foot first time, but he delayed and let Chris Smalling get back goal side.

"The game", he said, "was open in a week when they play three home games and have 6-1, 6-0 victories, relaxed, everything nice and easy and we play two matches away, hard where the second was like a final against one of the best teams in Europe where we give everything physically, mentally". City's stunning third team goal, however, put the game to bed. I go for what I felt in the game and it was there until minute 80-something.

Jose Mourinho sent on Romelu Lukaku in a bid to try and restore parity, and the Belgian forward made an instant impact by winning a penalty with his first touch after he was brought down by Ederson. "It is not about David de Gea, it is about the way we lost the ball".

Lukaku was introduced in the 57th minute, while Sanchez replaced Ander Herrera in the 73rd minute...

Jose Mourinho's men secured a 2-2 draw with third-placed Chelsea FC at Stamford Bridge last month thanks to Anthony Martial's two goals.

While United had a tough midweek trip to Juventus - coming from behind to win 2-1 - City had the luxury of facing a weak Shakhtar Donetsk and easing to a 6-0 win. Mourinho blamed the European competition for United's collapse in the blue half of Manchester.

United could not muster another one of their recent comebacks against City, who looked a class above across the 90 minutes.

"For me zero words against my players, everything is positive". It's completely different. We arrived in a little bit of different circumstances.
