Republican Kevin McCarthy to become next House minority leader

"We have a significant number of votes", Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan said after the Democrats' Wednesday morning conference meeting.

Following a tea party-backed Republican wave election in 2010, the GOP assumed control of the House, and Pelosi continued to run the Democratic caucus as minority leader.

In a little less than two months, the Democrats will be in charge of the House, Nancy Pelosi will be speaker and wielding a heavy gavel, and Trump will still be their archenemy.

It could be tricky, as Trump has called for new funding for his wall on the southern USA border with Mexico, an issue that has divided some congressional Republicans. Republicans, he said, "need to do a better job of letting people know what we stand for". "But there's an opportunity for us to come together and get single-focused on the message". Rep. Mark Meadows of North Carolina, the Freedom Caucus chairman, called it a "gentlemanly" debate. The strategy is this: Show that the California Democrat lacks support after new and current members commit to voting for another candidate on the floor. They also warned that they need a new fundraising mechanism to compete with the small-dollar online donors that powered Democrats to victory.

"We had a compelling narrative to offer the American people", he said. Three incoming, previous-serving Democrats who have not said how they will vote each supported Pelosi in previous leadership elections.

Oppenhiemer told Fox, "Republicans now have to work with a Democratic majority and they are going to have to decide if they want somebody who is both substantively more conservative, but also extremely more unreasonable in the leadership". "It's going to take an attitude and an intensity about standing up for the truth and fighting".

The No. 2 spot of House minority whip was claimed by Representative Steve Scalise.

Van Drew has repeatedly said he won't support Pelosi.

No challenger to Pelosi has emerged, but the group agitating for changes at the top of party leadership says there would be plenty of candidates should her bid be derailed.

"Come on in. The water's warm", Pelosi told the Wall Street Journal last week as she challenged her detractors to produce an alternative.

Democrats took control of the U.S. House of Representatives in the November 6 elections and Republicans held onto a majority in the U.S. Senate, but 14 federal and two state governorship races remain undecided more than a week later. Nebraska Sen. Deb Fischer is running for vice-chair of the conference. Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley will replace Utah Sen.

The rest of the GOP line-up below the Kentucky Republican is expected to shuffle slightly. Sen. John Thune of South Dakota. Roy Blunt of Missouri take over the third- and fourth-ranking spots.

Senate Democrats reelected Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of NY and Minority Whip Sen.

"I think that progressives of my generation would like to see somebody who is more independent of the corporate class that does not reflect a new generation of progressive Democrats" lead the House Democrats, Konst added.

Rep. Jim Jordan of OH is trying to prevail over fellow Republican Kevin McCarthy to serve as minority leader.

"Kevin McCarthy not only has the expertise, he's a team player", said Rep. Mike Turner (R-OH), who had no qualms about backing McCarthy for the GOP slot. I am getting encouraged. He's certainly earned the position.

"I never want to be disrespectful to anyone who has served, especially a woman who has broken glass ceilings".

"The bishop of the church will call, the top fundraiser will call, President Obama will call", Schrader said of the tools Pelosi could use to win over Democrats. Jordan is challenging Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., for the minority leader position.

Despite Jordan's interest, McCarthy is favoured to win his party's vote.
