The murder of Saudi Arabian journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Turkey on 2 October led to considerable pressure being placed on WWE to cancel their Crown Jewel show, which would mark their second such event in Saudi Arabia having signed a 10-year multi-million dollar deal with that government. The event gets underway with the kickoff show at 11 a.m. ET; the main card begins at noon ET.
Shortly after returning to action this April, Bryan competed at the Greatest Royal Rumble event (also held in Saudi Arabia) like everyone else on the roster.
The event, now airing on the WWE Network, marks Hogan's first appearance on WWE TV since the Summer of 2015.
WWE fired Hogan and removed him from its Hall of Fame after audio surfaced of a racist rant of Hogan using vulgar language on a sex tape while talking about his daughter's boyfriend.
Powell's POV: WWE added the U.S. Championship match today.
"Similar to other USA -based companies who plan to continue operations in Saudi Arabia", the WWE said, "the Company has made a decision to uphold its contractual obligations to the General Sports Authority and stage the event". The country was never mentioned during the broadcast, like they hadn't been on "Monday Night Raw" and "SmackDown Live" for the weeks leading up to the event.
This section will be updated.
-Sheamus and Cesaro vs. The kickoff show, for the United States Championship, will start at 8:30 PM.
As for the rest of the show; Brock Lesnar won the vacant Universal Championship after what essentially amounted to a squash match with Braun Strowman, who was heavily expected to win. Quite aside from actually going forwards with Crown Jewel in the first place, the company decided this of all shows was the right time to wheel out Hulk Hogan for his big return - a good day to bury bad news.
