And he struggled with his emotions as he recounted Bush, a former fighter pilot, showing him a plaque mounted at the family compound in Kennebunkport, Maine, inscribed with the letters CAVU: "ceiling and visibility unlimited", a description of flawless flying conditions.
It was his first North Atlantic Treaty Organisation meeting in 1989, and as a parade of world leaders took turns at the podium, newly elected US president George H.W. Bush was taking a lot of notes.
Roberts joined ABC News' Chief White House Correspondent Jonathan Karl and Political Director Rick Klein to discuss Bush's presidency.
The family and friends of the late president were in attendance Thursday morning to mourn.
"He was a man of such great humility", said Alan Simpson, former Republican senator from Wyoming. George W. Bush, who as president was sometimes prone to an occasional cry, appeared to steel himself with deep breaths throughout the service before letting out a sob.

Bush's service dog, Sully, was taken to the viewing, too - his main service these last months since Barbara Bush's death in April being to rest his head on her husband's lap. Former Canadian prime minister Brian Mulroney and biographer Jon Meacham will also deliver eulogies for the 41st president.
None of that means, however, that Jeb Bush and President Trump's differences have been resolved.
