Jurgen Klopp charged with misconduct over Liverpool celebrations

His shot bounced off the top of the crossbar with Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford scrambling.

"I have to apologise because I didn't want to be disrespectful - but I couldn't stop myself", Klopp said, per BBC Sport.

I'm strong mentally and it won't affect us for the next game, just got to get on with it and say sorry to the Everton fans because I think you can see our progression as a group, the chances, the football we've played today, I think that's always a positive.

"For us the most important thing is the present, and is the future".

"I told him how much I respect his work, because it's incredible what he has done with that team".

"We are here to build something, to prepare our club and players to compete in every match, every time against these sides and not just on one day where you can have one good day".

"Both teams delivered a proper fight, proper derby from the first second", Klopp said.

However, significant investment and a change in playing style introduced by Silva have seen the Toffees move up to sixth in the table, their best league position for some time, and that has caught Klopp's attention.

However, he has tried not to let that affect him and his reward came by writing his name into derby-day history.

"I knew long before he signed the contract that Virgil would be outstanding as a player". He said: 'All of your colleagues have asked me about the situation but to be honest I didn't see it.

Klopp reacted to the goal by running to the centre circle and celebrating with Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson.

"He did really well up to that moment and it is something no one expected".

The 1-0 victory extended Liverpool's unbeaten sequence in Merseyside derbies in the Premier League to 16 games although the manner of the winning goal made this one of the more unforgettable of those games.

Liverpool - beaten Champions League finalists and fourth-placed finishers in the Premier League last season - host Merseyside rivals Everton on Sunday, where Salah can reach a personal milestone. We have to play without Hendo and that's how it is.

"It's hard to take but I guess we can take positives from the way we played". I'm a defender so sometimes you need to to think a little bit more as a striker when you are up there but, in the end, it was fantastic it goes in like that.
