Roger Stone indicted by Mueller for obstruction, witness tampering, false statements

Roger Stone, a confidant and former campaign adviser of U.S. President Donald Trump, has been arrested on several criminal charges stemming from the U.S. special counsel's Russian Federation investigation, according to a grand jury indictment made public Friday.

Mr Stone is said to have spoken to senior Trump campaign officials - who are not identified - about "organization 1" [believed to be Wikileaks] "and information it might have had that would be damaging to the Clinton Campaign".

Court documents say a senior Trump campaign official "was directed" to contact Stone about additional releases and "what other damaging information" WikiLeaks had "regarding the Clinton campaign".

"Stone claims that his communication with "(WikiLeaks) had occurred through a person STONE described as a 'mutual friend, ' 'go-between, ' and 'intermediary.' STONE also continued to communicate with members of the Trump Campaign about Organization 1 and its intended future releases".

"This statement was recently made by Roger Stone, essentially stating that he will not be forced by a rogue and out of control prosecutor to make up lies and stories about 'President Trump.' Nice to know that some people still have 'guts!'"

Sanders appeared on camera from the White House hours after Trump's longtime advisor was arrested in Florida and indicted on seven counts of obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and lying to investigators about his contacts with WikiLeaks.

The dog - a Coton de Tulear named Bianca - belongs to New York City comedian, radio host and moonlighting civil rights activist Randy Credico. Stone has denied any wrongdoing.

He went on to work for Ronald Reagan's successful presidential campaigns in 1980 and 1984, and advised George HW Bush in his bid for the White House in 1988.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller said in court papers that Stone had advance knowledge of a plan by WikiLeaks to release the emails, which analysts say may have contributed to Trump's stunning defeat of Democrat Hillary Clinton.

Stone is the sixth Trump aide charged in Mueller's investigation into potential coordination between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign and the 34th person overall. The indictment against Stone does not allege that Stone or anyone in the Trump campaign colluded with Russian Federation.

An email matching that wording that was published by The New York Times shows that the official Stone referred to was Steve Bannon. Stone says he would have voluntarily surrendered to federal officials. Attorney Grant Smith, who represents Stone, did not return a phone message seeking comment Friday.

"Organization 1" is nearly certainly WikiLeaks.

Stone is scheduled to make a court appearance later Friday.

The text message said "well done".

During the 1970s, Stone also played a key role in bringing the full force of outside campaign money behind negative advertising against congressional candidates.

Stone was arrested by Federal Bureau of Investigation agents Friday on charges of lying to Congress, obstructing a probe and witness tampering. In December 2017, Credico told the House he would plead the Fifth, just days before he was set to appear. "Richard Nixon", prosecutors said. I guarantee you are the one who gets indicted for perjury if you're stupid enough to testify.

"So you have no emails to anyone concerning the allegations of hacked documents ... or any discussions you have had with third parties about Julian Assange?" the committee asked Stone.

Multiple times, Stone told him to do a "Frank Pentangeli", a reference to a "The Godfather: Part II" character who was a former Corleone ally who later feigns innocence to Congress before killing himself.

The indictment does not accuse Stone of coordinating with Russia's election interference in 2016.
