On one hand, it seems odd for a rebuilding team such as the Padres - San Diego went 66-96 past year and SportsLine projects a 67-95 record in 2019 - to commit so much money to a free agent when they're not ready to contend.
Well, apparently things are "heating up" between Harper and the Philadelphia Phillies, the White Sox main competition for both of these guys all offseason long.
"Rumors spreading that Harper will be a Phillie for 10 years and 310 million". That has not changed, and nor have my two favorite places for him. "Obviously, I'd love to stay here, but that's really not what I'm anxious about right now".
"I'm not ruling them out", Heyman said of the Giants.
I think Harper and the Boras Corporation did a smart play - meet with the Padres, meet with the Giants, prove that there were mystery teams, which they did.
That's what it's all about - trying to create leverage here.
Phillies fans spent the weekend constantly refreshing Twitter as talks between the team and Bryce Harper intensified.
The two-time AL MVP is owed $33.25 million in each of the next two seasons, completing a $144.5 million, six-year contract. Boras gets bailed out again by an owner.
Trout, 27, did not want to discuss his contract situation on the Angels' first day of full squad workouts.
The Padres were late entrants into the race to sign Machado but now firmly are contending for his services with the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago White Sox, New York Yankees and perhaps other teams. A day earlier, Major League Baseball insider Jim Bowden said there's "a lot of momentum" for Harper inking a contract with the Phillies.
