Man arrested in vicious subway attack on elderly, homeless woman in NYC

A man allegedly seen in viral video repeatedly kicking an elderly woman aboard a New York City subway train was arrested Saturday and charged with assault, PEOPLE confirms.

The arrest happened after the police released photos of Gomez, and a cell phone video of the attack.

Witnesses say the man started yelling at the woman after the train was stopped at Nereid Avenue, and then he started attacking her.

Gomez was ordered to be held.

As the man exited the train, he said, "WorldStar that", referring to a website that posts video of violent altercations, The New York Times said.

The NYPD posted images of the suspect on Friday, March 22, describing the attack as "heinous." .

WPIX reported that 36-year-old Marc Gomez is expected to be charged with second degree assault, third degree assault and harassment.

She tried to defend herself as her attacker kicked her in the face and body - while straphangers can be heard shouting in the background, but doing nothing to intervene.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea wrote about the apprehension on Twitter, adding that the victim is "getting the care, advocacy & support needed". "Thank you to the worldwide community for the tremendous assistance".
