French league title in balance as PSG, Lille both drawn

I have watched this replay dozens of times, and I still have no idea what Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting was thinking during Sunday's Ligue 1 match against Strasbourg. They can seal it if they draw at second-placed Lille next Sunday.

Choupo-Moting was starting his latest match in the place of superstar Kylian Mbappe, and the World Cup victor reached out to his red-faced teammate following the astonishing miss.

Paris St Germain manager Thomas Tuchel said it was "necessary" to rest stars Neymar, Edinson Cavani and Kylian Mbappe as Strasbourg stopped them from securing the title at Parc des Princes.

Amid disbelieving looks from teammates, with the score at 1-1 in the first half, Choupo-Moting accidentally prevented a goal for his team despite the ball being about to cross the goal-line.

"I thought that the defender was maybe going to take the ball and, after, I hesitated to take the ball, I asked myself if I was offside and everything went very quickly", Choupo-Moting said.

PSG are 2-1 down at the time of writing.

PSG has a 20-point lead over Lille and will be crowned next week if it beats its northernrival away.

Fresh from winning the League Cup last weekend, Strasbourg had equalised prior to Choupo-Moting's howler when Nuno Da Costa turned in a Lionel Carole cross, and they found themselves 2-1 up in the 38th minute when Anthony Goncalves lashed home from 22 yards.

The surprise result means PSG still need one more victory to clinch a sixth Ligue 1 title in seven seasons - and the eighth in the club's history.

Lille, on the other hand, sit five points clear of third-ranked Lyon, who were shocked by Dijon 3-1 at home on Saturday, in contention for second automatic spot in next season's Champions League group stage.

He was replaced by Mbappe after 60 minutes with his side a goal behind and chasing the game.
